Do Family Doctors Still Deliver Babies?

Posted on: February 15, 2019

When you find out you’re expecting, the list of decisions you have to make may seem never ending. Though no one can deny there are many choices to be made, you can find encouragement in knowing each decision helps prepare you for labor and moves you one step closer to the coming of your baby. Perhaps one of the first decisions you will face is who you want to deliver your baby. Determining who is the best man or woman for the job often comes with a great deal of pressure, as it seems like one of the most important aspects of the delivery process. This pressure, though unpleasant, is understandable, since this person will not only deliver the baby but is also responsible for caring for you and the fetus throughout the duration of your pregnancy. However, this decision does not have to overwhelm you once you become aware of your options and determine which factors you value most.

You may have already started the selection process and begun evaluating local OB-GYNs in their different areas of speciality that pertain to you. However, perhaps one of the options that is not well-known yet equally worth considering is that of a family doctor. OB-GYNs and OB fellowships are not your only option for delivery, as some family doctors also deliver babies. Of course, not all physicians offer obstetrical services, but perhaps yours does. This can be an excellent option for some women, as your primary physician is familiar with your medical history and has treated you in the past. However, it’s important to ask about their training and experience specifically  in obstetrics. It should also be noted that most family practitioners who offer these services typically only provide care for low-risk situations and will direct more complicated cases to an OB specialist. Keeping all of these factors in mind, you can make a well-informed decision about which healthcare provider will be best for your delivery.
